Hi everybody!
Boy, have I had lots of fun looking at things inside the museum! There is so much more to see here that I haven’t shared with you, but I figured it was time to make my way to the USS NAUTILUS. I can’t wait any longer….
Hmmmm….they told me that it was outside the museum, tied up at a pier on the Thames River. I’m looking and looking, but I can’t seem to find it, not even with the help of these cool binoculars. I can see lots of other neat things, though. Let’s see, if I look south, down the river towards Long Island Sound, I can see a HUGE bridge. The Goldstar Bridge, which is 6,00 feet long, spans the Thames River and connects Groton (where the museum is) and New London, which was a big whaling port a long time ago. (I haven’t been there yet, but I’m sure my adventures will take me there sometime.) The first span of the bridge was built in 1943 and the second span was finished in 1973.

Looking south, I can also see a big green building. My friends here told me that is Electric Boat, where a lot of the submarines I’ve been talking about have been built. In fact they still build submarines there. Boy, would I love to see that!!! So much history has happened there – submarine designing, building, and launching. Did you know that the wife of a president was once here in Groton, to christen the NAUTILUS at her launching? How cool is that?! See the link below for a picture of Mrs. Eisenhower christening NAUTILUS.

If I look directly west across the river, I can see the Coast Guard Academy. This is where new officer trainees go for college and training. It looks really beautiful…guess I better add that to my adventure list too. My friends told me that a few presidents have come here to speak at the Academy, and when they do, they have to shut down the bridge! Traffic isn’t allowed to cross at all….wow, I wonder if they would do that for me? What do you think?
Well, I don’t see the NAUTILUS yet, I guess I’ll have to go outside to see her.
See you again soon!
Your friend,
Stanley
