Hi everyone! Wow! Look at this….it is so cool! I thought it was a really small submarine, but my friends here at the museum told me that it’s really a Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV for short). The SDV could carry two men, but because it is not water-tight, the men had to wear special SCUBA equipment. SCUBA (which stands for Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) allows people to breathe underwater without having to go to the surface for air, just like fish! I bet they could stay under the water for a long time! The men on the SDV helped the men (they call them a crew) on the big submarine.

When my friends were telling me about the SDV, I pictured it riding next to the big submarine, so they could help the crew when they needed it, but that isn’t what happened at all. The SDV was really stored INSIDE the big submarine! They said that it is carried in a special watertight tank which is “piggybacked” to the submarine. I’ve given my friends piggybacks before and I thought they were heavy….I can’t imagine carrying this around on my back! Well, I see another cool small submarine, so I’m going to go look at it. See you tomorrow!
